IGF::OT::IGF NASA RESEARCH ANNOUNCEMENT: A FUNDAMENTAL QUESTION IN SOLAR PHYSICS IS HOW MAGNETIC FIELDS EMERGE FROM THE SOLAR CONVECTION ZONE INTO THE SOLAR ATMOSPHERE AND FORM SUNSPOTS WHICH CAN REMAIN STABLE FOR TIMESCALES UP TO WEEKS OR EVEN MONTHS. LOCAL HELIOSEISMOLOGY CAN PROBE THE SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS OF ACTIVE REGIONS INCLUDING FLOWS WHICH MAY BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE FORMATION AND STABILITY OF SUNSPOTS. THE MAIN SCIENCE GOALS OF OUR INVESTIGATION ARE THE FOLLOWING: CHARACTERIZING AND UNDERSTANDING THE ORIGIN AND PROPERTIES OF FLOWS AROUND SUNSPOTS, UNDERSTANDING THE PROPERTIES OF ROTATING SUNSPOTS WHICH ARE OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE ERUPTION OF STRONG FLARES, AND DETECTING AND UNDERSTANDING FLOWS ASSOCIATED WITH THE RISE AND EXPANSION OF FLUX BEFORE AND DURING ITS EMERGENCE AT THE SURFACE. WE WILL CARRY OUT THREE MAIN TASKS INCLUDING: 1) DEDUCING THE NATURE AND PHYSICAL INTERPRETATION OF SUBSURFACE FLOWS BELOW SOLAR ACTIVE REGIONS BY APPLYING HELIOSEISMIC HOLOGRAPHY TO BOTH OBSERVATIONS FROM THE HELIOSEISMIC AND MAGNETIC IMAGER ONBOARD THE SOLAR DYNAMICS OBSERVATORY AND TO REALISTIC MAGNETOCONVECTIVE SUNSPOT MODELS, 2) USING THE NUMERICAL MODELS OF SUNSPOTS AND EMERGING FLUX TO VALIDATE AND OPTIMIZE HELIOSEISMIC INVERSION METHODS FOR USE IN INTERPRETING SDO/HMI AND OTHER NASA DATA, AND 3) PROVIDING OUR MODELS AND INVERSIONS TO THE COMMUNITY FOR TESTING AND IMPROVING OTHER METHODS. IGF::OT::IGF NRA AWARD FOR PROPOSAL ENTITLED: PHOTOSPHERIC PROPERTIES OF FLARING VS. FLARE-QUIET ACTIVE REGIONS: CAN WE USE HMI VECTOR MAGNETOGRAM SEQUENCES TO QUANTIFY, "WHEN AND WHY DOES THE SUN GO BOOM?". THE PROPOSED INVESTIGATION WILL FOCUS ON UNDERSTANDING THE PHYSICS OF WHEN A SOLAR FLARE IS IMMINENT. WE WILL TEST THE HYPOTHESIS PUT FORTH BY SCHRIJVER (2009) THAT, IF SOLAR FLARES ARE THE RESULT OF SELF-ORGANIZED CRITICALITY IN THE CORONA, NO COMBINATION OF PRESENTLY AVAILABLE OBSERVABLES CAN DETERMINE WHEN A FLARE WILL COMMENCE. THUS OUR STUDY WILL FOCUS ON THE NECESSARY AND SUFFICIENT CONDITIONS IN AN ACTIVE REGION FOR A FLARE TO OCCUR. THE APPROACH IS TO CHARACTERIZE SOLAR ACTIVE REGIONS IN BOTH A KNOWN PRE-FLARE STATE AND FLARE-QUIET STATE (AS A CONTROL) IN TERMS OF WHAT ARE THOUGHT TO BE KEY PHYSICAL DESCRIPTORS. WE WILL CHARACTERIZE NOT JUST THE PHOTOSPHERIC MAGNETIC FIELD AND ITS EVOLUTION, BUT ALSO LOOK AT FLOWS INFERRED FROM IT, FRACTAL AND MULTIFRACTAL MEASURES, AND INFERRED CORONAL MAGNETIC TOPOLOGY FROM A MAGNETIC CHARGE TOPOLOGY MODEL. THE DATA SOURCE IS VECTOR MAGNETOGRAM TIME SERIES FROM THE SOLAR DYNAMICS OBSERVATORY/HELIOSEISMIC AND MAGNETIC IMAGER; PIPELINE-PRODUCED HMI ACTIVE REGION PATCHES (HARPS) WILL BE USED TO ENSURE A PUBLICLY-AVAILABLE REPEATABLE DATASET AND A TENABLE COMPUTATION DOMAIN. THE UNIQUE PROPERTIES OF THESE DATA WILL ALLOW FOR MORE PHYSICALLY MEANINGFUL CALCULATIONS OF MANY OF THE PARAMETERS, RATHER THAN THE PROXIES WHICH ARE FREQUENTLY USED WHEN ONLY LINE OF SIGHT OBSERVATIONS ARE AVAILABLE. FURTHER, THE CADENCE OF THE HMI OBSERVATIONS WILL ALLOW FOR IMPROVED ABILITY TO FOLLOW THE EVOLUTION OF THE PARAMETERS FOR A LARGE SAMPLE. IGF::OT::IGF THE GOAL OF THE PROPOSED WORK IS TO STUDY THE GLOBAL EDDY-FIELD AT SCALES AS SMALL AS 20 KM USING THE AVAILABLE LONG-TERM ALTIMETRIC RECORDS. BY ACCESSING THE HIGH SPATIAL RESOLUTION THAT IS PRESENT IN THE ALONG-TRACK ALTIMETER DATA, WE ARE ABLE TO RESOLVE THE IMPACTS OF EDDIES AT SCALES 2.5-10 TIMES SMALLER THAN IS POSSIBLE USING THE PRESENT GENERATION OF BLENDED MULTI-SATELLITE MAPS THAT ARE CURRENTLY WIDELY USED FOR EDDY-RELATED STUDIES. NEW RESEARCH HAS REVEALED AN EDDY FIELD - EXTENDING DOWN TO TENS OF KILOMETERS AND EVEN SMALLER-THAT IS CONSIDERABLY MORE ACTIVE, AND MORE IMPORTANT TO THE CLIMATE SYSTEM, THAN PREVIOUSLY BELIEVED. YET THE CURRENT GENERATION OF MAPPED PRODUCTS IS CREATED WITH THE EXPLICIT INTENT TO AVERAGE OVER RATHER THAN RESOLVE SUCH MESOSCALE AND SUBMESOSCALE EDDY STRUCTURES. THE FAVORED MAPPING METHOD IN SATELLITE ALTIMETRY-OPTIMAL INTERPOLATION OR OI - INITIALLY BECAME POPULAR IN OCEANOGRAPHY AT A TIME WHEN DATA DENSITY WAS A FRACTION OF WHAT IT IS TODAY. BECAUSE THERE WAS SO LITTLE DATA, IT WAS DESIRABLE TO AVERAGE OVER MESOSCALE FLUCTUATIONS IN ORDER TO MAP THE LARGE-SCALE FIELD. THERE IS NOW BOTH THE INTEREST AND THE DATA DENSITY TO SUBSTANTIALLY RESOLVE THE MESOSCALE; YET THE LARGE SMOOTHING SCALES OF 01 ARE STILL EMPLOYED. BY INCORPORATING MAPPING ACHIEVEMENTS TOGETHER WITH AN ALTERNATE APPROACH TO MAPPING EDDY KINETIC ENERGY, WE WILL PROTOTYPE A NEW CLASS OF GRIDDED ALTIMETRIC PRODUCTS WITH SMOOTHING SCALES THAT CHANGE ADAPTIVELY IN ORDER TO MAKE BEST USE OF ALL AVAILABLE DATA. THE VARIABILITY OBSERVED IN THESE NEW MAPS, PARTICULARLY THE EDDY KINETIC ENERGY, WILL THEN BE COMPARED WITH THE RESULTS FROM AN ALONG TRACK EDDY CENSUS IN ORDER TO ISOLATE THE CONTRIBUTIONS FROM EDDY-LIKE SEA SURFACE HEIGHT ANOMALIES HAVING PARTICULAR RADII, VELOCITIES OR ROSSBY NUMBERS, AND POLARITIES (CYCLONES VS. ANTICYCLONES). THIS APPROACH USES AN EVENT DETECTION ALGORITHM TO LOCATE INDIVIDUAL ANOMALIES IN THE ALONG-TRACK DATA, WHICH IN TURN THEN FORM THE BASIS FOR AN ESTIMATION OF THE LOCAL POPULATIONS AND PROPERTIES OF THE UNDERLYING EDDY FIELD USING AN INVERSE METHOD APPROACH. CAREFUL ATTENTION WILL BE GIVEN TO DISTINGUISHING THE DIFFERING CONTRIBUTIONS OF EDDIES VERSUS CURRENT MEANDERS OR EXCURSIONS WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THIS CENSUS. THE NET RESULT WILL BE AN ABILITY TO ESTIMATE THE LOCAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO EDDY KINETIC ENERGY AND CIRCULATION ASSOCIATED DIRECTLY WITH COHERENT EDDIES, AND TO IDENTIFY THE REGIONS IN WHICH THESE ARE SIGNIFICANT. SINCE WE WILL BE WORKING WITH CONSIDERABLY HIGHER RESOLUTION THAN WAS POSSIBLE IN PREVIOUS STUDIES, NEW RESULTS CONCERNING THE NATURE OF THE EDDY FIELD AT THESE UNRESOLVED SCALES ARE ANTICIPATED.
