THE DESCRIBED FAILURE ANALYSES SHALL BE PERFORMED ON METEOROID IMPACT SITES IN SIX RIBBON CABLE HARNESS SEGMENTS SUPPLIED BY THE NESC. THIS DEVICE TYPE IS USED IN THE JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE. TESTING SHALL BE PERFORMED IN A MANNER SIMILAR TO THAT PERFORMED IN FEBRUARY, 2008 FOR THE NESC BY THE CONTRACTOR. DESCRIPTION OF TASKS TO BE PERFORMED: THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE THE NECESSARY MANPOWER AND EXPERTISE TO PERFORM THE FOLLOWING: MULTIPLE DAMAGE SITES SHALL BE INSPECTED AND ANALYZED BY THE CONTRACTOR, ON EACH OF 5 HARNESS SEGMENTS, CREATED BY HYPERVELOCITY METEOROID IMPACTS OF SINGLE PROJECTILES FRAGMENTED BY AN EXTERNAL METEOROID SHIELD. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING INSPECTION AND ANALYSIS: 1. PERFORM OVERALL OPTICAL AND MAJOR SURFACE DAMAGE AREA(S) SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE (SEM) STUDIES OF DAMAGE SITES SELECTED IN ITEM 4 BELOW. 2. ASSESS THE CONDITION OF THE HARNESS SEGMENT ELECTRICAL SHIELD AND THE SHIELD RELATIVE DISTANCE TO EXPOSED WIRES AT MAJOR IMPACT SITE(S) E.G. BY FEIN FOCUS X-RAY. (QUANTIFY THE THREAT OF SHIELD SHORTING TO WIRE) 3. ASSESS THE CONDITION OF THE WIRE AT MAJOR IMPACT SITE(S), (QUANTIFY THE RISK OF SEVERED WIRE) 4. PHOTOGRAPH A TOTAL OF FIVE MAJOR IMPACT SITE DAMAGES (NO MORE THAN TWO ON ANY ONE SAMPLE) BY SECTIONING TO ASSESS THE DEPTH OF PENETRATION AND DAMAGE FOR THE ONE THROUGH SHOT HARNESS SEGMENT, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION: 1. DOCUMENT THE CONDITION OF THE ELECTRICAL SHIELD AT THE IMPACT SITE (DOES THE ELECTRICAL SHIELD DEFORMATION OUTWARD OR INWARD TOWARDS THE WIRES AS A RESULT OF THE HYPERVELOCITY IMPACT) AND THE CONDITION OF THE WIRES.
